Life goes on

Once I got over the initial shock of being a Mother and all of the realisations that came with it, something inside of me must have kicked in because I was determined to give my son the best life possible.

With support from my Mam I was able to start finding work to help make a better life for Jordan and I. My first ever job was working as an assistant in a local store. I later took a job working as a barmaid, which allowed me to earn tips as well as a fixed salary. I hated every minute of it and constantly looked to improve not only my earnings but also find a job where the hours were better suited to spending quality time with my son.

Eventually I settled on working as a taxi dispatch clerk because the hours helped me to be with my son more often.

I realised that whilst this kind of work was better than none at all, I would have to come up with something better if I wanted our lives to improve.

I decided to start a little business on eBay selling cosmetics. It took a few months of saving up to get enough money together to be able to buy my first selection of stock. I can remember how hard it was to part with my savings and I wondered if the risk was worth it. I believed in what I was doing but there is also a fear in the back of your mind that you are risking everything for nothing.

I took the plunge and bought a selection of make up from a wholesaler. With a username of Panacea81 I opened my online store and called it Pancosmetics.

Orders came slowly at first but it was such an exciting time for me. I looked forward to finishing each shift at work so I could check how my little store was doing. I hit upon the idea of taking pictures of the make up applied to my face rather than just showing it in the containers.

This had a dramatic effect to my business. After just three months, my sales went through the roof and I found myself earning the same money, maybe even a bit more than what I was getting in my normal job. I realised for this to work properly I needed to spend more time on my business and decided to quit my taxi dispatch job. It was a nerve-wracking time but it was also very exciting. I was getting hundreds of emails every day asking how I had created the looks on my pictures. I was getting so many emails that I started to panic because I realised I wouldn't have time to run the business if I spent all day long replying to them. I needed to find a way to answer everyone at the same time so I hit upon the idea of making a video showing people how to do it. I opened a YouTube account and uploaded my first ever video back in July of 2007.
